Water sachets or sachet water is a common form of selling pre-filtered or sanitized water in plastic, heat sealed bags in parts of the global south, and are especially popular in Africa. In Ghana, almost all students drink their water daily from small plastic pouches. This does not only lead to enormous amounts of plastic waste but also to health risks due to contaminated drinking water and microplastics.

Abibiman Daakye Adwumakuo will be conducting interactive workshops in July 2026 at Mampong JHS about waste prevention and sustainable consumption. To offer a concrete solution, we want to install a portable water filtration system called PAUL (“Water Backpack”) at the school. PAUL filters up to 1,200 liters of clean drinking water daily without electricity or chemicals. This allows students to drink clean water directly at school without generating plastic waste.

In addition, all students will receive reusable stainless steel water bottles so they can use the filtered water safely and sustainably. Following a successful pilot project, a total of five schools in the district will be equipped by 2029 to strive for long-term positive environmental change.

What we are raising funds for:
– Purchase of the PAUL water filtration system
– Transport to Ghana
– On-site installation and training
– Production of stainless steel water bottles for the students
– Planning and implementation of sustainability workshops at the schools

Project Budget: 25,000 Euro
