SDG 12 Workshops in five schools and delivery of five water filtering equipment

This project focuses on SDG 12 (sustainable production and consumption). In the form of workshops, Abibiman Daakye Adwumakuo aims to increase the attention of high school students (grade 7-9) on reducing and managing waste, consumption behavior, and choices that would help manage the available resources in the district for both the present and future generations. Plastic, textile, and electronic waste, illegal mining, and chicken importation are areas we plan to cover. Five Junior High Schools in the district would be part of this project.

After the successful completion of the workshops, we plan to support the schools with water filtering equipment. This will help reduce plastic waste in the schools since they mostly drink from water sachet. PAUL the ‘WaterBackpack’, is a small and portable (23 kg) membrane filtration unit. It can filter 1,200 liters of water per day, usually significantly more (even up to 6,000 liters per day)

Project Background

Pre-Colonial Ghana was mostly organic and sustainable. Water was fetched directly from the rivers, kept in clay pots that cleansed and cooled the water for drinking and other purposes.  Now we have water sachets flooding our streets, gutters, and sea. Small scale mining, popularly known as ‘Galamsey” has grown into a gigantic monster terrorizing the existence of the nation. In a bid to survive, the youth have given in to polluting the water bodies in Ghana, all in search of gold and other minerals. There is an increasing rate of deformities in children born in recent times  due to the chemicals in our water bodies……

Importation, which happens to be one of the negative effects of colonialism, has also accumulated a lot of textile, plastic, and electronic waste over the years. Local farmers can hardly compete with cheap imported chicken remains that sit on the sea for months and accumulate many harmful bacteria. Since sustainability is a global issue and it affects other countries one way or the other, it is important for us to address these challenges in Ghana.
